Eternal Rome & Italy by Rail

ABOUT THE TOUR

From Rome’s grandeur to Matera’s paleolithic cave dwellings to medieval Palena, Italy’s irresistible culture and history beckon you to explore. During your five nights in Rome, get to know this timeless city and its environs. Tour Vatican City, gaze at Michelangelo’s frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and visit St. Peter’s Basilica. A full free day in Rome allows you to discover the Eternal City at your own pace. Travel to the hills above Rome to see the village and papal summer retreat of Castel Gandolfo and the 11th-century Abbey of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata. Nearby, the baroque Villa Aldobrandini is the setting for a tasting of the region’s famous Frascati wines. Then, step back into the golden age of travel on a two-night journey into the Italian countryside aboard the luxurious La Dolce Vita Orient Express. Head south to Matera for a tour of the city built into the hillside caves. As you travel back to Rome, visit Palena, considered to be one of Italy’s most beautiful towns.
