ABOUT THE TOUR

Thrill to Egypt’s eternal allure on this exciting, 10-night adventure with tour host Carla Thorson (bio below)! Revel in the magnificence of ancient Egypt guided by a licensed, expert Egyptologist who accompanies you on all excursions. Enjoy five nights in Cairo, one night in Luxor and a four-night Nile cruise aboard the deluxe Sanctuary Nile Adventurer on this small-group experience. You’ll wonder at the majestic Great Pyramids of Giza and step inside atmospheric tombs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Stroll through the awe-inspiring Temples of Luxor and Karnak, take in the remarkable Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), and marvel at the colossal Great Temple of Ramses II carved out of a mountain in Abu Simbel. In Cairo, visit its venerable mosques, Coptic churches and colorful bazaar. You’ll also learn how antiquities are preserved at the Luxor research center of The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures of the University of Chicago. This active program features four flights within Egypt, including round-trip to Abu Simbel; deluxe and first-class hotels; and an ample meal plan with wine at dinner.

Executive Director, Call of the Sea

Carla Thorson is an accomplished executive in the Bay Area and global nonprofit community, now steering Call of the Sea, focusing on sustainability and expanding the organization’s educational impact and reach. With almost 20 years of experience in program design, strategic communications, and development at the World Affairs Council, the Global Philanthropy Forum, and the Commonwealth Club, she has a deep appreciation for the role nonprofits play in building community and advancing shared goals. She also brings experience in higher education as a professor of political science at St Mary’s College, UCLA and Cal State LA. She has taught US Sailing and American Sailing Association dinghy racing and coastal cruising for more than 15 years. Her leadership promotes marine conservation, environmental sustainability and the maritime traditions that are so important to the Bay area and the world. When not onboard the Matthew Turner or Seaward sharing her passion for sailing and the ocean with young people, you will find her out with her husband on their Catalina 36, racing on San Francisco Bay, scuba diving or hiking with their dog, Bo’sun.
