Carla Thorson is an Adjunct Professor of Politics at St Mary’s College of California and a Senior Non-Profit Consultant. As a world traveller, she has lived in England, Germany, Poland and Russia, visiting more than 50 countries on all seven continents. During her tenure as the senior vice president of programs at World Affairs in Northern California, she has been a study leader for groups to East Europe, Russia, the Baltics, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Svalbard in the Northern hemisphere; to South Africa, East Africa, Argentina and Antarctica in the Southern hemisphere; to Central Asia, China, Taiwan and Malaysia in the East; and Cuba in the West. Beyond her career with World Affairs, Dr. Thorson was a faculty fellow in Political Science and worked for the International Institute at UCLA. She also served as a consultant at the RAND Corporation and a Russian analyst at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She received her MA and PhD from UCLA and also holds an MLitt from Oxford University and a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When not exploring the world, she enjoys sailing on San Francisco Bay with her husband and hiking with her black lab.
