The French philosopher Auguste Comte is often quoted as having said, “Demography is destiny.” Even if that is an overstatement, certainly demography is important—to the development of communities, economies, nations, and ultimately the entire human race. Today, demographic trends seem to be moving in what would have even very recently been considered a surprising direction—aging and declining populations. What will that mean in the later years of the 21st century?

Dr. Darrell
Bricker

CEO, Ipsos Public Affairs

Dr. Darrell Bricker holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Carleton University, where he was a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellow, and a BA and MA from Wilfrid Laurier University. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by Wilfrid Laurier University, which named him one of their top 100 graduates in the last 100 years.

Dr. Bricker is a prolific author. He’s written five national bestselling books, Searching for Certainty: Inside the New Canadian Mindset (with Ed Greenspon – Doubleday, 2002), What Canadians Think About Almost Everything (with John Wright – Doubleday, 2005), We Know What You’re Thinking (with John Wright – Harper Collins, 2009), Canuckology (with John Wright – Harper Collins, 2011), and The Big Shift (with John Ibbitson – Harper Collins, 2013).

Dr. Bricker is a popular public speaker who regularly engages with audiences around the world. He is interviewed frequently in the media, appearing on CNN, the BBC, Bloomberg, and Al Jazeera, as well as on all of Canada’s major television and radio networks. He’s written articles for publications as diverse as Canada’s Globe and Mail and France’s Le Monde.

Dr. Bricker is a passionate supporter of Canada’s men and women in uniform. He serves by appointment of the Minister of National Defence as the Honorary Colonel of the Queen’s York Rangers, Canada’s oldest army reserve regiment. For his volunteer work with the military he has received a commendation from the Commander of the Army, a commendation from the Admiral of the Navy, and has been awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal by Canada’s Governor General.

Under Krupp’s leadership, EDF has become one of the world’s most influential environmental organizations. He has focused international attention on the problem of methane emissions from the oil-and-gas system and led EDF’s innovative corporate partnerships with FedEx, KKR, McDonald’s, Walmart and others.
Since he took the helm in 1984, EDF’s annual operating budget has grown from $3 million to over $180 million, staff has increased from 50 to more than 700, and membership has expanded from 40,000 to over 2.5 million.
Krupp was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News and World Report and is a recipient of the 2015 William K. Reilly Environmental Leadership Award.

Dr. Zachary
Karabell

President, River Twice Research

Zachary Karabell is an author and columnist, the founder of the Progress Network at New America, and president of River Twice Research and River Twice Capital. Previously, he was Head of Global Strategies at Envestnet, a publicly traded financial services firm. Prior to that, he was President of Fred Alger & Company. In addition, he ran the River Twice Fund from 2011-2013, an alternative fund that focused on sustainability.

Educated at Columbia, Oxford and Harvard, where he received his Ph.D., Karabell has written widely on history, economics and international relations. His most recent book was The Leading Indicators: A Short History of the Numbers That Rule Our World, and his next book, Inside Money: Brown Brothers Harriman and the American Way of Power will be published by Penguin Press in early 2021. He is the author of eleven previous books, including The Last Campaign: How Harry Truman Won the 1948 Election (which won the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award for best non-fiction book of the year in 2000); Superfusion: How China and America Became One Economy and Why the World’s Prosperity Depends On It (Simon & Schuster, 2009); and Sustainable Excellence: The Future of Business in the 21st Century, co-authored with Aron Cramer (Rodale 2010). He also sits on the board of New America and PEN America. In 2003, the World Economic Forum designated him a “Global Leader for Tomorrow.”

As a commentator, Karabell is a Contributing Editor for Wired and for Politico, and the host of the podcast “What Could Go Right?” Previously he wrote “The Edgy Optimist” column for Slate, Reuters, and The Atlantic. He is a LinkedIn Influencer, and a commentator on CNBC, Fox Business and MSNBC. He also contributes to such publications as The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and Foreign Affairs.
