Journey through Britain

About the tour

Join a 14-day small group tour traveling from gracious Edinburgh to England’s legendary Lake District; from spectacular Snowdonia to the rural Cotswolds and Roman Bath; ending in cosmopolitan London.  Arriving in Edinburgh, visit Edinburgh Castle, encounter the Royal Mile and Holyrood, and have time for independent exploration.  Traveling on to the beautiful Lake District, stop William Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, and Hill Top, the 17th-century farmhouse of Beatrix Potter of The Tale of Peter Rabbit fame.  Reaching Wales, visit 13th-century Caernarfon Castle, and Snowdonia National Park.  Continuing in England, your exploration includes Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon.  See Bath’s historic Roman Baths, the Jane Austen Centre, and the Cotswolds before traveling to London, with a visit of Stonehenge en route.  Join Ambassador Barbara Stephenson for substantive briefings throughout.

About the Lecturer

Barbara Stephenson called London home from 2010-2013 as the senior career diplomat at the American Embassy on Grosvenor Square. She was Consul General in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 2001-2004, and United Kingdom desk officer at the State Department from 1992-1994. She gets back to the United Kingdom every chance she gets, to take in the gardens, the history, the theater, and to experience conversation raised to an art form. As part of her PhD studies, she has read everything from Beowulf to Chaucer to Shakespeare to Milton to Tom Stoppard, and even took an entire graduate course in landscape in English literature.

“This trip was just wonderful. The World Affairs Travel office staff did a great job. I really enjoyed the feeling of being in the English countryside. The old buildings and gardens were just beautiful.”
