Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, who have traveled through Asia and Africa documenting the experiences of women whose lives have been marked by cruelty, anger and sadness, joined the Council on Monday, October 6, 2009 at the Radisson-Warwick Hotel to discuss their newest book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joined students at Bodine High School for International Affairs for a daytime intimate meeting and general school assembly on May 4th. Dr. Rice shared her academic passions and aspirations and encouraged students to work hard and pursue their own passions. Later that evening, Dr. Rice spoke to over 600 members and guests of the Council at its 60th anniversary kick-off event, held at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue.

In recognition of International Womens Week, the Council hosted Suraya Pakzad, founder and director of Voice of Women Organization, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to helping women achieve economic, social and political rights in the western region of Afghanistan. Joining Ms. Pakzad was Aldo Magazzeni, a humanitarian, businessman, photographer and founder of Traveling Mercies, an international organization committed to providing clean water systems, shelter and other vital community projects to villages around the world.

Greg Mortenson, best-selling author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time and Director of the Central Asia Institute (CAI) visited the Council in January 2007. In 1993, a failed attempt by Greg to climb Pakistan's K2 brought him to an impoverished Pakistani village where he was nursed back to health. It was here that he was inspired to build schools, especially for girls, in some of the most remote and inhospitable regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan — the breeding ground of the Taliban.
